March 28th @ 8pm come enjoy an amazing concert put on by Jeremiah Sammartano.  Jeremiah is a Los Angeles based, Emmy nominated Native American singer/songwriter who fronts the bluesy/Americana group, Jeremiah and the Red Eyes. He has covered many miles over the past several years - taking the various roads spreading music influenced by the raw blues of Charley Patton, the lyrical and often raucous sounds of The Pogues, the twang of Willie Nelson, and some vintage rock and roll - "Delta Blues and Twangy Grooves" - from Los Angeles outward through the Southwest, Austin, St. Louis, Nashville (where he relocated for a spell in 2008-2009), Chicago - and overseas to the UK. In the past Jeremiah has shared the stage with Willie Nelson, Southern Culture On The Skids, David Olney, Mike Stinson, SHURMAN and has performed on the radio shows: WDVX Blue Plate Special out of Knoxville, TN., The Live@Lunch show on KRFC out of Fort Collins, CO., and Chris Morris' Watusi Rodeo show out of Los Angeles. In Spring 2011 Jeremiah received an Emmy nomination for writing music for the documentary, Prison Through Tomorrow's Eyes. Three albums have been released; 2004's "Red Eyed And Restless", 2010's "Under Your Spell", and 2012's 10-song album called "HOME". In 2013 these were followed by local shows and a Southwest tour with friend Mikaela Dewar (from New Zealand and currently living in Nashville), and shows across the Midwest and South.

thursday nite Open Mikes are really pickin' up!

just about* every performer was top notch:
Mark from Ridgeway -- very good!

Ellis on piano -- was that his brother singin'? verrrry entertaining -- both of them will GO YARD some day if they key-pit up!

the guy whose songs were about (1) with and (2) without his girlfriend -- very intricate!

the subtle guitar player (with holes in the knees of his jeans) -- set another mood entirely.

the new (to me) dude with the small "traveling guitar" -- he coaxed BIG sounds from that AND sang quite well ~~

the wacko harmonica player at least called up three different guitar players for a "blast from the past" -- a somewhat free-form jam which thursday nite open mikes have been (in)famous for ~~

Josh who is consistently good, sparse yet fills-the-spaces sound, always good to hear.

i almost forgot to mention THE SOUND ENGINEER (Thad) who worked consistently to keep everyone on balance and provide the sound which was needed.

JERROD who was the behind-the-scenes M C who kept whatever order there was to be kept.

oh yeah, ETHAN -- now, I know I deafenedly am not alone here folkes -- this "kid" will "GO YARD" (yeah, i like those raggay ephorizmz) -- and we knew him when. hey: i'm a guy and partial to female voices -- but he is right up there with Brian Gregor (could you imagine the two of them singin' together?!) with the vocals -- the two of them are THE BEST local VOCALISTS i think i have heard (well... maybe Ms. Emily is in that club) and he's young and I KNOW he could/would/should very well BE HUGE (musically) someday. a great night to be there for open mike is all i basically wanted to reminisce about. right now. to be continyood ...

Open Mike, Thurs. April 2: there are a lot of good musicians showing up for this, but in my opinion the best may have been the young blonde lady accompanied only by her guitar -- who played somewhat early. Her voice was very expressive, beautiful, a formidible instrument. Ellis on the piano displayed versatility: he played a classical ditty ("Clair de Lune"? something like it) and later an original blues piece with an accompanying musician. Matt also showed versatility: singing his song with a guitar and then while playing piano. The guy from San Diego -- I thought he sounded a bit like Mark Knoppfler! and, again, thanks to Jared as behind-the-scenes facilitator and Thad the sound-man who also backed up a couple groups on drums!

Oh: the PBS documentary on Cavalcade is viewable -- somewhat hard to find but it's there. NO music by the musicians shown, but Jeannine Purser is interviewed, telling the story and summary of the Cavalcade phenomenon.

ERIKA (to name the "young blonde lady") -- continues to entertain and impress April 16 open mike. Josh & Kyle -- a tight very good duo, Josh's vocals always uplifting. Matt: his first song had intricate guitar stylings blending well with the voice. No Ethan nor Ellis ?! Thanks again to Jared and Thad for hosting.

it's gittin' so they might need a SIGN-IN Sheet for Thurz nites. @ least Ellis and his bro (and a friend) got out and up early -- then ya' gotta hand it to Jim M: he facilitated/arranged a venue where 5 (?) other musicians also got to play -- Jay on bass kept it solid and together. the somewhat free-form vibe continued with the lady singin' with her guitar and a guy on harp -- later joined by Nita/Kim (& Fred, and ?? on congas) for a loose interpretation of "know U rider" -- and the craziness continued --> . IT'S NEAT that there was about as much music OUTSIDE. people still waitin' to play as it got dark -- I vote for an excursion to THE GOOD OL' DAZE OF THURZDAY OPEN MIKE: where practically everybody who got up and there was room on stage, they filled it up! Thanx again Jared and Thad for hosting!

oh-pen mike (not quite headless, yet) -- May 13: ERIKA is a very good reason to go hear open Thursdaze -- i'm not one to "get technical" nor analytical in critiques/reviews -- but the yearning, the angst, in her voice -- accompanied by a capable and complementary guitar -- is she getting better? could be. all 3 songs were borderline-mesmerizng, and her chris isaacs (i know i got that wrong, but) interpretation is still ringing in my head.
ETHAN (who, at present, is NOT an alcoholic) was just a little up-tight, it seems. Relax, dude! you KNOW you are good, we (the awed-ee-ance) know you're good, accept and integrate that and then flow with the go.
ELLIS & JESSE are fun and Jesse, being so gosh-darn young, will expand his range and repertoire. In fact, they played with two other musicians to really help diversify the evening.
Thanks to Jared for facilitating the evening -- and Tyler is learning the sound board? (we're all in trouble ~ )

RAPP music! insofar as i'm aware, this is/was a 1st for open mike. the dood didd good! i wasn't sure if i'd like this or not -- but the three pieces (and I'll get his name if I see him again) he did were entertaining and it was fun to see (yet) another artist at work.
good job Josh and accompanying lady guitarist/vocalist.

Ellis and Jessie.

come on, Jim -- encourage a couple people to join you!
the lady singer w/harmonica dude: consider looking for a drummer/other guitarist/keyboard -- would "flesh-out" the sound!

at least after the regular open-mike was done, things appeared to get a bit "experimental" -- shades of open mikes past ~~~

New Sound-Board! Sam/Thad/Jared workin' out the kinky stuff (or embellishing the k. stuff ...?). the first lady to sing on stage commented that after her and the ¿accompanyist? played "at least everyone else will know they did better than someone".
This was a (nother) night some would have liked to see the soloists invite back-up and accompaniment on stage more often.
Except Pat: who played superbly and quite competently both vocal and guitar. Good ol' regular Jim M. Erika gettin' a little experimental. continue to enjoy her yearning hints-of-anguish voice. and electric! Josh is about as professional yet "a regular guy" as you'll see on stage. very good and accomplished, always a joy to hear. and "regular" Ellis and Jessie. I hope we didn't dissuade the "rapper dude" -- would like to see him return. and, is Ethan playing somewhere else?

good to have ETHAN back (July23) and also Ellis/Jessie.

July 30: "rapper dude" VICTOR was back with three originals. it is fun to see someone "in action" doing this -- the focus, the pacing, the artistry. but: it was easier to HEAR what he was saying a month or so back when he was here before. was the difficulty understanding just me? -- or perhaps something with the sound system?
WILL WHALEN: "looper dude" -- another big HIGHLIGHT of the evening -- and this guy has a "looper" device, and it is obvious he is and has been and will continue to HAVE FUN with it. his voice and guitar ability ain't bad, either.
some 'regulars': MATT with a long original love-song? ballad (+ a good short ditty on the piano)
JIM: "I like beer". cheery ~
DAY & JEBBIE (he told me to call 'em that) -- sometimes, like tonight, they sound somewhat good as a duo -- but hopefully they'll find a drummer and other guitarist or bass?
newcomer SUE ('the Night-bird') with more originals --
JARED & THAD = our gracious benevolent hosts for the evening.
ELLIS continued to show his seemingly-increasing-mastery of the piano -- and backed-up a lady vocalist later on ~

Destinee Reed on stage! much appreciated. Prob'ly the smallest awed-eee-ance she has played to inna while.
& 'Night-Bird' Sue takin' pride in her former student (Destinee) and the other lady vocalist was also one of her students!
Pat: always enjoyable. and thanx to our hosts: Jared & Thad ~
