it is possible there might not be any comments on this variety show. too bad -- as I/we know it was a "good" and solid and diverse and heart-felt and there was a high percentage of the compassion quotient there. (az yooz yoo uhl)

but I didn't attend tonight. I would have posted under "open mike nights" but there are no recent opportunities to do so.

so ... the open mike session on Thursday Jan. 7 was (IMHO) the most interesting in a long time. frequently over the past two or so months there might be 3 or so individuals or groups who played. not so tonight! Jessie (of "Jessie & ellis" fame) debuted his singing accompanying himself on guitar debut. Lotta guts, moxie, chutzpa, kid. We all know you'll be strummin' that guitar like an apprentice pro within a year, prob'ly less'n a few months.

then Debbie&jay. Deb had a vocal harmony box which many of us had not seen before, tho' the product has been out there a while. hope to see it again, and deb said that other people could use it (provided she and what's-his-name also play).

PAT accompanying himself on guitar was GOOD as usual. his 3rd song (wish I could remember the name, but original?) was very good.

DESTINEE (& 2 members of the SINK CREEK BAND) took the stage and it was quite a treat. Treat? ordinary people PAY to hear stuff like that. "Jump into the river" (or similar title) is still resonating in my head.

Kim & Nita -- they represent what the Cavalcade is all about, and continues to be about. It is obvious WHERE the musical ability of the "next and 3rd generations" of their family comes from. But ... Nita should have called up vocal accompaniment (present at the venue) for the "Living Rumours" song.

ETHAN is back (haven't seen him in a while) and was trying out his (new?) guitar amp instead of the house system. I/we think he should have plugged into the house system with that -- as it seemed to over-power his vocals. And someday we'll all say we knew Ethan back when ... (when we're "here" and he's ON THE BIG STAGE.)

and ... surprise of the evening: AMANDA en ACAPELLA --> when she started singing, everyone stopped to listen. great stuff. (tho' Ethan suggested she team up with Ellis to play in public!).

thanx to THAD and JARED & RON for hosting.

open mike Jan 14 -- Ellis and Jessie continue to diversify some while also singing (playing) Ellis' standard song (something with "I hope he buys you flowers ..."). He DOES get "soulful" -- and they both are learning guitar.
debbenJay -- she did mention that she were a musical group, the name would be Meltdown. she and her guitar, or her hands, perhaps her brain, weren't getting along. At least they got one song in ...
Speakin' of standards, Jim Moran does those well, with a humorous ditty about Joggers. among other things. Now, on Kahliga (? you know, cigar store indian) he should get any- and everybody to drum along, Indian tom-tom stylee.
MARTIN (didn't get his last name) sang accompanied by his guitar. good range, good playing -- he got up later, and ... *

Ethan played some songs (rehearsed only once or twice before with 'house band' Thad and Jared, he said) -- it's fun watching jamming ... Ellis was quietly playing along on the piano, and ... next time they (Ethan and Thad and Jared) do that, get a keyboard for Ellis, too!

* Martin took the stage again for what this "old timer" remembers what the Thursday nites used to have a lot of: A JAM FOR EVERYBODY. Martin joked that we could set a record (like how many people can cram into a VW bug) -- but how many musicians could fit on the stage, each with a large instrument? I think there were 7 or so people participating. Wot phun ~
