1st of all: the following is about the SEPTEMBER Variety Show -- but, at present, there is no space nor venue nor outlet to comment on THAT, so I'll talk about the September show here !

Da ‘Cade, Sept 10 (2016) VARIETY

Ken K: as usual, verrrrrry good! Kept it rollin’, rollickin’, with not just-a-small dose of irreverence with the relevance.

“Jay & Debbie” ? didn’t hear them, I had to step outside for a smoke.

LARRY – “2 songs” – seein’ and hearin’ Larry strum the banjo while singin’ his own compositions seemed like I’d tripped back in time, to the mid-1960’s Greenwich Village – to see (and hear) the beat poets and Robert-Zimmerman-esque balladeers of the day plying their trade. Good stuff.

“Black Lab & the Banjo” – (Angie & Shaun): I hope that whenever they play again, the Cavalcade (well, the Cavalcade people) quickly move the chairs out of, say, half the floor so the audience can dance! Their song was infectious and the enthusiasm and joy of playing palpable.

Amanda: most of what I’ve heard Amanda perform in the past I would rate 4.5 stars (+) out of five and tonight (“here’s to you”) was no exception. She has a great sense of emanating the combination and subtlety of her voice and guitar for the complete and full-surround-sound package.

Butch (Kline): “In my own way” – each time I hear him I am re(re)-re-minded of just how good he is. Like Amanda, he, guitar in hand, has a masterful sense of the interplay between the vocal and the strings.

INTERMISSION

Prophet of Melon – not so this month. Cullen revealed that it seems the story is taking a different tack – film-play? Perhaps  maybe he’ll consider me for the part of the Army Surplus Store owner. Cullen read from … a John Nichols? book instead.

Girl From Ipanema – Erika and Rudy and Thad did a marvelous rendition. Verrrrry good. The sound-guy (Jared) jumped on the board as this trio started, and had the mix pretty well balanced in short order. Erika sang as well as she usually does …. and then … surprised us with a KAZOO SOLO. She played that pretty well, too.

Cullen and Matt … and the (anonymous to me) banjo player performed another tight, enthusiastic, well-balanced song. Matt sang and he is interesting vocally distinctive.

¿Dostoyevski? – or “Jebbie and Day”? just before they started, my cell-phone (didn’t ring, it) vibrated and it was “work” calling – so I went out-sighed for a smoke and counseled the borderline-panic-stricken dispatcher at the Commission the preliminary steps to take in dealing with yet another oilfield disaster.

Black Lab & the Banjo, again. They played another rousing energetic song – reminding me that tonight’s ‘Cade V-show had, without exception, a variety (of course) of excellent performers!

Amanda (Joy B.) kept the bar up, way up, and we all enjoyed another 4 or so minutes of enthralling superb musical story-telling.

Thad not only played but sang – both ‘instruments’ of which he displays a high degree of mastery – to keep the evening rolling.

Butch not only reminds this writer of “just a hint” of Cat Stevens – but channeled Robert Johnson pretty well in his much-appreciated rendition of Crossroads. (I think it was Crossroads – I KNOW it was Bobby J).

And to close the evening out, Jared and Leah sang a duet – “Night Owls” – Jared also on guitar. Poignant, they swept the listener up into the current of their song … I was sad when it ended.
